Learning How To Read

life

Learning English as a second language was so tough for me. Maybe I came from South America just a bit too late, but I almost didn't graduate high school because of this, and I had to spend my summer after senior year just to pass high school. When all my friends were getting into University and moving on with their life, I had to miss a year of college because I didn't have my diploma on time. This was weird to me because I was excelling in the Peruvian Navy School, and I got particularly high scores in the Math SAT and ACTs. I did focus on the arts while in college, which gave less focus on written words, and more on the visuals. It was only after college that I hacked my ways through my career with "how to" audiobooks since I always felt that was the only way to keep up with the pace of other professionals. When I had the time to read a novel, I would rather spend it on poetry in my native language with more sensual words of inspiration by Neruda, Vallejo, or Garcia Marquez. Sadly, Spanish is not the primary language spoken in the world, English is, and I want to get better at it. I also would like to listen to myself think in English more, rather than translating it in real-time. I know it's going to be tough since I can finish an English audiobook in one-third of the time that it takes me to read one. But just like everything else I have gotten good at in life, it's just going to be a practice game. I am currently revisiting in paper form Futureproof: 9 Rules for Humans in the Age of Automation by Kevin Roose, and Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.
